Bencubbin Botanic GardensWork began on the Bencubbin Botanic Garden around 2007 with the Bencubbin Lions Club, Better Bencubbin Progress Association, Bencubbin Economical Association, BEDA (Secret Men) with grant funding from Lotteries West. This site at one time had been a pig pen for CBH. The surface had been bitumenised. From evidence the plants had been planted as seedlings around the 11th December 2007. These plants were sown in groups of five to 10. As the centenary of settlement of agricultural was aproaching the Centenary Wall was completed. This comprises of four section of a wall in a circular fashion. The wall was made of conventual bricks and these were rendered by sub contractors to Les Ryan. The sand finished rendered was painted by the local painter. Eight murals were then put on the wall, two to each section. The murals represent the various eras. The artist was Philippa Gillett. Murray Cooper made a junk art scupture which has been placed in the centre of the Centenary Wall. In late 2015 the misplaced Botanic Garden sign was located in the Nursery Shed. Along with the sign, three boxes of full of aluminium plant signs were also found. The Kings Park Botanical Garden through Pin Tay have assisted in identifying quite a number of the plants in the first half of 2016. The WA Herbarium have taken over the role with their botanist Rob Davis assisting in the identification of further plants. The WA Herbarium have also provided an Excel to record the identified plants an their location in the garden. |
